Le Paradisier (literally The Bird of Paradise) is a French divination game from the 1990s, first published as a collectible insert in Femme Actuelle magazine. Each of the 52 illustrated cards represents a bird species, chosen for its symbolic meaning — often inspired by traditional sayings or natural behaviors.
For example:
🕊 Le Cygne (The Swan) – purity, fidelity, spiritual beauty
🦉 La Hulotte (The Owl) – wisdom, mystery, and foresight
🐦 Le Moineau (The Sparrow) – simplicity, friendship, and daily joys
🦜 Le Perroquet (The Parrot) – communication, repetition, or gossip
🦅 L’Aigle (The Eagle) – vision, power, and higher perspective
The game was designed as a light, intuitive oracle: each bird conveys an emotional or situational message, guiding the querent through reflection rather than prediction.
The name Le Paradisier evokes both the tropical bird of paradise and the paradis (heavenly) nature of insight — a poetic bridge between the natural world and human intuition.
At the time, readers would cut out and mount each card by hand, gluing the illustrations on plain backs, making every surviving deck unique.
