This original Ducale “Spécial-Cercle” AXE deck is now very hard to find in this condition. Produced between the 1960s and 1980s, it represents one of the finest examples of postwar French tarot production — sturdy, elegant, and unmistakably nostalgic.

This vintage Tarot des Régions de France was published in 1986 by Grimaud and illustrated by Florence Magnin. Designed primarily as a French tarot game deck, it offers a rich visual journey through the regional traditions and rural life of France.

The trump cards depict scenes of everyday peasant life from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while the court cards proudly feature traditional costumes from Provence, Alsace, Brittany, and Burgundy. The suits follow the standard French playing card system, making this deck ideal for classic tarot gameplay as well as for collectors of illustrated or regional decks.

Printed on sturdy cardstock, the cards have aged well and retain their charm and clarity. This is an original vintage edition, now out of print.

SMIR (Société de Manufacture d’Industrie Récréative) was a respected French card and game publisher active during the 1970s–1980s. Their editions were often produced in collaboration or under license with Grimaud / France Cartes, sharing the same printing standards and card formats.
SMIR’s wooden box editions—like this one—were marketed as “luxury collector’s sets” and were often distributed in boutiques and gift shops rather than through gaming stores. They are now sought after by collectors for their fine packaging, traditional French craftsmanship, and connection to the golden age of postwar cardmaking in France.
