🪶 Collector’s Note
SMIR (Société de Manufacture d’Industrie Récréative) was a respected French card and game publisher active during the 1970s–1980s. Their editions were often produced in collaboration or under license with Grimaud / France Cartes, sharing the same printing standards and card formats.
SMIR’s wooden box editions—like this one—were marketed as “luxury collector’s sets” and were often distributed in boutiques and gift shops rather than through gaming stores. They are now sought after by collectors for their fine packaging, traditional French craftsmanship, and connection to the golden age of postwar cardmaking in France.

72-Card Historic Facsimile Deck – Cologne, 16th Century – RARE COLLECTOR’S EDITION
A superb and scholarly reproduction of the legendary round playing cards attributed to Master PW, an anonymous engraver active in Cologne in the mid-16th century.
Published by Edition Leipzig in 1974, this fine art facsimile recreates one of the earliest surviving circular card decks, celebrated for its Renaissance engraving style, allegorical scenes, and extraordinary craftsmanship.
Each card is reproduced with remarkable fidelity, featuring knights, hunters, mythological figures, symbolic emblems, and humorous or moralizing motifs — a fascinating window into the visual culture of early European playing cards.
The set includes a 58-page bilingual booklet (German & English) offering deep historical context on early cardmaking techniques, woodcut engravers, and the mysterious Master PW.
A true museum-quality edition, rarely encountered complete and in such good condition.
