This 1988 France Cartes edition has become increasingly hard to find, especially complete with its original bilingual leaflet.
Released for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, it was printed only once and never reissued.
Silvia Maddonni’s artwork has since gained a small cult following for its expressive, theatrical portrayal of Revolution-era characters.

Romantic opera originated in Germany and Italy in the early 19th century. Early exponents included Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini. 

This beautiful deck titled Jeux de Cartes des Opéras Romantiques was published by the Bibliothèque Nationale – Musée de l’Opéra de Paris. It features historically inspired artwork depicting original costume plates from iconic French Romantic operas such as Les Huguenots and Robert le Diable by Meyerbeer, Ali-Baba by Cherubini, and Gustave III by Auber. These operas were first staged at the Paris Opéra between 1830 and 1840. The court cards and Jokers illustrate named characters in full theatrical costume.
