This beautifully restored Jean Dodal Tarot is one of the purest and most respected recreations of the early Tarot de Marseille tradition. Originally engraved in Lyon around 1701, the Dodal deck is considered a foundational “tarot-source,” transmitting the symbolic science of medieval Master Image Makers.
Jean-Claude Flornoy — renowned for his museum-level restorations — faithfully recreated this historic deck by studying the two surviving originals, held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the British Museum.
His work revives the vivid colours, bold lines, and subtle symbolic language of the 18th-century engravers, allowing the Dodal imagery to speak again with clarity and strength.
🔹 Edition: 2009, Jean-Claude Flornoy
🔹 Cards: 78 cards
🔹 Size: approx. 132 × 73 mm
🔹 Languages: French & English booklet included
🔹 Condition: Excellent — cards crisp and clean; box shows light shelf wear
🔹 Authenticity: Faithful Flornoy restoration based on the two surviving originals
🪶 Collector’s Note
The Flornoy restoration of the Jean Dodal tarot is now highly sought after, as Flornoy’s editions were produced in limited runs and are no longer printed.
Collectors prize this version for:
— its historical accuracy,
— its clean linework and vivid colours,
— and its uncompromising fidelity to the 1701 engravings.
An essential reference deck for anyone serious about the Tarot de Marseille lineage.
