During the first decades of the twentieth century, numerous French occult reviews and correspondence courses distributed tarot and initiatory teachings through detachable supplements. Students often mounted the cards themselves, creating personalized working sets that combined tarot symbolism, astrology, Kabbalah, and the teachings of influential occultists such as Papus and Saint-Yves d'Alveydre.

Rather than being part of a commercially manufactured tarot deck, the card was likely issued as a collectible magazine insert or educational supplement. Readers would cut out the cards and mount them onto cardboard to gradually assemble a complete set for study and divination—a practice common in French occult circles during the interwar period.

Surviving examples are increasingly difficult to find today, particularly as individual pieces. Beyond its value as a tarot-related artifact, this card is a genuine fragment of the French occult revival that shaped much of modern Western esotericism.

Each beautifully hand-colored engraved card depicts a symbolic figure, object, or scene inspired by everyday life in late nineteenth-century France. Unlike conventional oracle cards, each card also incorporates a standard playing-card inset in the upper left corner, allowing the deck to serve both as a divination tool and as a traditional card game. This dual-purpose design reflects the ingenuity of French cartomancy during the Belle Époque.

Condition

The deck is complete with all 33 cards. The cards remain on their original heavy card stock and show honest age-related wear, light soiling, and softened corners consistent with use over more than a century. The colors remain remarkably attractive.

The deck is housed in a vintage fabric-covered slipcase, which is not the original case but provides excellent protection and displays beautifully.

Early Ikarial editions are especially sought after for their striking mystical artwork and for Bussière’s historical role in publishing occult texts. Complete sets with the original instruction booklet are increasingly uncommon—this is a true gem of angelology and Kabbalistic symbolism.

First published in 1912, the Cagliostro Tarot deck uses a combination of numerology, astrology, Kabbalah, and worded representations on each card. The 22 Major Arcana cards feature colorful art by Bruno Sigon. The 56 Minor Arcana cards are stylized versions of traditional double-ended court figures and pip cards from the nineteenth century.

This rare edition was published in Italy by Modiano and distributed by U.S. Games Systems (1981). Includes instruction book by Stuart R. Kaplan.
