The Tarot de Besançon is Valerio Verrea's faithful restoration and reinterpretation of one of the most fascinating historical tarot traditions of the eighteenth century. Based on the rare Besançon pattern created by Jean-Baptiste Benois, this edition preserves the distinctive iconography that replaces the Pope and Popess with the classical deities Jupiter and Juno, reflecting the influence of the Protestant Reformation across Switzerland, eastern France, and southern Germany.
Rather than simply reproducing a historic deck, Verrea carefully restores the artwork while presenting it as a modern tool for tarot study and personal exploration. The deck retains the traditional Marseille structure while offering a unique symbolic perspective through its distinctive archetypes.
