THE FIRST PART is devoted to a summary presentation of the opinions and doctrines professed by the Hermetic philosophers. — THE SECOND PART is a historical study in which we establish the role that alchemy played in the society of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a time when it exercised the greatest influence over minds. — THE THIRD PART, entitled History of the principal metallic transmutations, is a summary of the strange events which have maintained for so long the belief in the doctrines of transmutatory science. — THE LAST PART, Alchemy in the Nineteenth Century, will demonstrate that alchemical opinions are still not completely abandoned, and that they can still be current.

Masterfully written by Louis Figuier, this work aims to draw attention to this period, as curious as it is ignored, in the science of past times.
