🪶 Collector’s Note
The Jeu de l’An II (“Game of Year 2”) is a faithful reproduction of a Revolutionary-era playing card deck created during the early French Republic.
The original, dated 19 Pluviôse An II (February 7, 1794), is preserved at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
This patriotic deck replaced royal figures (King, Queen, Jack) with Republican virtues such as Égalité (Equality), Liberté des Cultes (Freedom of Worship), and Liberté de la Presse (Freedom of the Press).
Reissued by B.P. Grimaud in the 1980s, this version was commissioned as a corporate gift by Tunzini Entreprise, with a historical explanatory card included.
It’s both a rare collectible and a fascinating testimony to Revolutionary symbolism in daily life.
