Title: The Bohemian Tarot
Publication Date: May 2007
Publisher: Dangles
Pages: 400
Language: French
Le Tarot des Bohémiens is one of the foundational texts of Western occultism, written by Papus (Dr. Gérard Encausse). First published in 1889, this monumental work presents the Tarot as the absolute key to the occult sciences, uniting divination, Hermetic philosophy, Kabbalah, alchemy, numerology, and symbolism into a coherent system.
In this modern Dangles edition (2007), Papus’ complete text is preserved in French, including his detailed explanations of the Major and Minor Arcana, complex symbolic correspondences, esoteric diagrams, and analytical tables. The book explores Tarot not merely as a tool of divination, but as a universal philosophical system revealing the laws governing matter, spirit, and transformation.
A cornerstone for serious students of Tarot, esotericism, and Hermetic traditions, this volume remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand Tarot beyond fortune-telling.
🪶 Collector’s Note
Le Tarot des Bohémiens is universally regarded as Papus’ magnum opus and one of the most influential Tarot books ever written. Frequently cited alongside Éliphas Lévi and Stanislas de Guaita, this work shaped the modern occult revival and the philosophical interpretation of Tarot in the 20th century.
Though reissued, it remains highly sought after by collectors, scholars, and advanced practitioners for its depth, rigor, and historical importance. A true pillar of esoteric literature and an indispensable reference for any serious occult library.
€209.00 EUR
A remarkable and highly collectible early printing of one of the most influential works ever written on tarot and Western esotericism.
Written by Papus, founder of the modern Martinist movement and one of the foremost occult scholars of the Belle Époque, Le Tarot des Bohémiens is widely regarded as a cornerstone of modern tarot studies. First published in 1889, the work was extensively revised and expanded into the celebrated “Édition définitive” of 1911, incorporating Papus’ mature reflections on symbolism, Kabbalah, numerology, and the tarot as the “absolute key to occult science.”
This copy is an early printing by Éditions Dangles, the historic Parisian publisher that preserved and reissued many of Papus’ most important works. Although printed later, likely between 1925 and 1935, it faithfully reproduces the complete text and layout of the definitive 1911 edition.

Historical Importance
Few books have had a greater influence on modern tarot than Le Tarot des Bohémiens. Papus synthesized occult traditions from the Kabbalah, Pythagorean numerology, Christian mysticism, and Hermetic philosophy, presenting the tarot as a universal symbolic language and a practical initiatory system. His ideas deeply shaped twentieth-century tarot scholarship and continue to inspire readers and researchers today.
🪶 Collector’s Note
While not a true 1911 first printing, this is an authentic early Dangles issue of the definitive edition and remains highly sought after by collectors of tarot, occult literature, and French esoterica. Copies in original wrappers with unopened pages are increasingly scarce and offer a tangible connection to the formative period of modern tarot history.

A rare and highly unusual historical tarot deck published in France in 1987 to commemorate the Millennium of the Capetian Dynasty (987–1987).
Created by French artists and cardmakers Gilles and Anne-Marie Hipeau, this remarkable deck was issued as part of the official celebrations marking one thousand years since the election of Hugues Capet, founder of the Capetian royal line that ruled France for centuries.
Rather than depicting traditional tarot figures, the deck reimagines the tarot through French royal history. Thirty kings and queens, alongside emblematic historical figures such as Joan of Arc and Eleanor of Aquitaine, replace the conventional court and major arcana characters while preserving the structure of a complete 78-card tarot deck.
This copy is No. 75 from the limited "dessin" edition of only 140 numbered examples.
Printed on Arches Pure Rag Vellum Paper (Papier Vélin Chiffon Arches Pur), one of France's most prestigious fine-art papers traditionally used for printmaking, engraving, and watercolor.
Produced according to the methods of the old French master cardmakers, the cards were printed on laminated paper stock and issued in two versions:
The Major Arcana and court figures are associated with significant personalities from French history, including Hugues Capet, Saint Louis (Louis IX), Philippe le Bel, Catherine de Médicis, Louis XIV, Marie-Antoinette, and many others.
A fascinating blend of tarot symbolism, genealogy, royal history, and French cultural heritage.
Includes:

The Tarot des Capétiens is one of the most elusive French historical tarot decks produced during the 1980s. Created to celebrate the thousand-year legacy of the Capetian dynasty, it was issued in an exceptionally small edition of only 140 numbered copies. Printed on luxurious Arches rag paper and conceived as both a historical study and an artistic object, the deck occupies a unique place between tarot, genealogy, and French royal history. Examples rarely appear on the market, particularly complete and uncolored copies such as this one.

His wisdom was transmitted to him by a magic book given to him by Shandra, the magician. A very special tarot that contained only images filled with colors, these magical images allowed visions of the future.
Illustrated during the naps of an angel... and by Maria MESTRE. "The colors exist only by the radiation of the light from which they come. They are reflected on all things from which they reveal their appearance to us. But only a certain number of them are allowed to us to see and understand."

Le Tarot Mystique is a rare and deeply symbolic tarot deck created and painted by Alexandre Mourouzi, a singular figure in late-20th-century Swiss tarot art. Conceived in 1978 and published in 1983 by Samjac SA (Lausanne), this deck stands apart for its introspective, spiritual, and highly artistic approach.
Unlike standard 78-card tarot decks, Le Tarot Mystique focuses exclusively on the 22 Major Arcana, presented as an initiatory path structured into three successive cycles of evolution. Each card represents a stage of inner transformation, blending universal symbolism, spiritual philosophy, and Mourouzi’s distinctive painterly language.
Hand-painted artwork gives the deck a meditative, sometimes unsettling atmosphere, far removed from traditional Tarot de Marseille iconography. This is a tarot designed not for fortune-telling alone, but for contemplation, psychological exploration, and symbolic study.
This copy belongs to the first limited edition, numbered and hand-signed by the artist, with a total print run of 2,000 copies only—now scarce on the collector’s market, especially when complete.

Book's extract :
A STORY AS OLD AS THE WORLD
The origin of tarot cards is practically unknown; it is lost in the mists of time, beyond the boundaries of myth. In fact, it was from pre-romanticism and romanticism with the triumph of philology and archeology that the supposed “invention” of the tarot cards began an increasingly marked return to very ancient initiatory origins.
Tarot cards were then only accessible to a small minority, at the cost of difficult challenges to overcome.
Some, like the philologist Court de Gébelin, considered that the tarot cards were the fruit of Egyptian civilization. Others, like Abbot Ephilas Levi, occultist and esoteric researcher, highlighted the analogy between the twenty-two major arcana and the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. For some, tarot cards originated in India where, 100 years BC. BC, a game of round cards representing the ten incarnations of the god Vishnu was very successful.
Others saw it as a legacy of ancient oracles, the product of the bohemian imagination or even the last legacy of a mysterious and vanished civilization: the mythical Atlantis to which Plato alluded in one of his famous dialogues. However, and whatever the civilization at the origin of the tarot cards, the essential lies in the religious and symbolic meaning which underlies each card so as to constitute a complete cycle, a sort of initiatory poem which revolves around a long process of purification and internal evolution. Indeed, if we consider the deep symbolism of the blades, it is not difficult to recognize in them the bases of Western esotericism, the laws of magic of the ancients synthesized in the famous "emerald tables" attributed to Hermes Trismegistus: “On earth as in heaven, above as below; a part represents the whole, the whole includes two poles, one masculine and the other feminine; the extremes touch, etc.”
