❓ Why the red dots on the cards?

Those red speckled dots you see on some cards are intentional printing marks, not stains. They replicate the original 18th-century Bologna cards:

• In historical Italian cardmaking, especially in Bologna, “sprinkled” or “spattered” red dots were used as a cheap and quick way to add decoration to otherwise plain card surfaces.

• The technique was called “spruzzatura” (spattering) or “schizzato”, done by flicking a brush loaded with pigment across the sheet.

• It was both decorative (to make the cards more lively) and functional: it helped disguise dirt and wear, so the cards looked usable for longer.

• Il Meneghello reproductions carefully preserve these marks to keep the authentic look of the originals.

So the dots are not flaws — they’re a characteristic feature of the Bologna tarot tradition.

In the 2007 edition the cards have a much better quality than the first print of 1998. Unlike the first edition, they are covered with a protective gloss coating, the colors come out much better.
In addition, the protective cover is much more elaborate than with the first edition.

In the booklet the reader finds everything he needs to know, in addition to the information in the old Röhrig-Tarot book.

Carl W. Röhrig is a genius with an almost incredible theme that extends to all areas of life. Tarot cards are only a small part of Röhrig's extensive work. His images are surreal, reminiscent of Dalí, in many cases they have an obvious or subliminal erotic component, but this does not seem profane. Based on the images, it is very possible to dream in foreign worlds and extract valuable impulses for everyday life from them.
