The deck of Jean-Pierre Payen is a bit distant from the traditional standard. The drawings here are treated with quite a bit of freedom. Thus we find flowers here and there throughout the deck, which have nothing to do with symbolism. Still, this deck was copied on older decks, retaining vestiges of them. This teaches us many things, keeping in mind that the one who made this deck first wanted to make a stylistic effect.

Jean-Pierre Payen was originally from Marseilles, but he was to settle in Avignon, the city of Popes neighboring the city of Marseilles.

The Epinal Tarot is a reproduction of a French deck from 1830, republished in 1979 by Grimaud. It has 79 cards - the extra is called the 'Consultant' - and some trumps have been renamed.

Epinal is a city in France, a former center of the print industry. The artwork is by the French engraver Francois Georgin (1801-1863).

It has Juno and Jupiter instead of Pape and Papesse and an extra card called "The Consultant". Emperor and Empress are unnumbered.

A coherent hermetic vocabulary, which brings together in a rich set of correspondences and analogies all the symbols transported for centuries by the descendants of the builders of cathedrals.

The concordances between the Hebrew and hieroglyphic alphabet participate in the description of the major arcana, while the Pythagorean theorem is inscribed in certain lapidary signs and other motifs of the 13th century, and the geometry of the facades of the cathedrals leads us to the elevation of soul as much as submission.
